Information on Surfaces
Surface types
The types of Chalk Couture surfaces available include reusable chalkboard style boards and one-time use wood and textile surfaces.
- Couture Boutique Boards – reusable chalkboard style boards including the popular Board & Base, chalkable chips and bistro sign
- Couture Gallery Boards – the Aiden Style White frames come in three sizes – 9″ x 12″, 12″ x 18″ and 18″ x 24″. They are reusable and magnetic with a distressed style. They make a great addition to any decor and can be hung, leaned on a shelf or placed on an easel
- Wood – wood surfaces are either white-washed or stained. It is recommended that wood surfaces be waxed before using. Waxing improves the adherence of the paste to the surface and protects your stencil.
- The box frames can be used on either side, with stain on one side and white-wash on the other.
- Cutouts and the block set are white-washed and can be used on both sides. They typically come with coordinating stencil designs, but you can use any stencil.
- Textiles – smooth canvas surfaces work perfectly with Chalkology Ink. Textiles include iron-on patches, banners and pillow cases in a variety of sizes.
- Chalk Suede – features thick, chalkable paper that is silky to the touch. It is easy to create with and used for the cards/envelopes and notebooks exclusively available through Chalk Couture.

Since there are such a wide assortment of surfaces, it can make it hard to choose just one! It’s fun to mix and match different shapes and styles in your home decor to keep things interesting and fresh. Here are a few things to consider that might help narrow down your choices:
- What’s the best size for your stencil choice? Do you want the design to fit the entire surface space or do you want a little space around it?
- Do you prefer reusable or double-sided surfaces? Double-sided surfaces can save you money and storage space!
- Does the color fit with your design and style? If not, can you change it? For example, box frames can be painted any color you choose if the stain and white-wash don’t work for you.
- Do you have to prep the surface? Do you have the supplies to prep it with? Note that it is recommended that wood surfaces be waxed before using.
