Using elements of the January 2024 Club Couture in different ways can really stretch your creativity. This stencil and its coordinating chalkable shape were a bit of a challenge to work with, but with a little innovation and community input, two unique projects were born!
January 2024 Club Couture
The January 2024 Club Couture includes the Good Old Days stencil, a coordinating chalkable shape and 3 Chalkology Paste Singles in Cadet, Camel, and Eucalyptus. The sentiment is a good one, but the design itself wasn’t all that inspiring. Getting on a Facebook Live to create a project really opened up the possibilities and asking for community input on how else to use the elements that come with the January 2024 Club Couture was eye-opening! Let’s take a look at two projects created using elements of this month’s club.
Project 1 – Journal Cover
Initially, the sentiment of the club design evoked images of a photo album cover or a scrapbook page. Most people don’t do photo albums anymore, so that project was ruled out. The blank journal seemed like a good option and would allow someone to record thoughts about today that one day might just be the good old days!
A journal like this would make a great gift paired with a beautiful pen or bookmark! The font gives off vibes of high school and old lettermen sweaters. A gift like this would be great for a senior in high school or someone going off to college!
Supply list for this project:
- a journal of your choice (this is a Chalk Couture ChalkSuede Notebook)
- a stencil of your choice (This notebook fits a Chalk Couture 5″ x 7″ stencil, but you can see any size stencil would work if your just using portions of it. Learn more in the Chalk Couture Stencil Guide.)
- chalk paste or paint of your choice (The Chalkology Paste colors used in this project are special colors exclusively available with a purchase in January – Dear Diary and Sincerely Yours.)
- a squeegee
- Optional: a paintbrush to “paint” chalk paste or paint onto the cover.
Steps to create this project:
- Choose your stencil and chalk paste colors. If you are painting the cover before applying the stencil, choose one lighter color and one darker color paste to create contrast.
- “Paint” the lighter of your chalk paste colors onto the journal cover.
- “Fuzz” your stencil really well to remove some of the stickiness and position it on your journal. (ChalkSuede loves to hold onto stencils so fuzz, fuzz and fuzz some more!)

- Apply your darker colored chalk paste to your stencil.
- Slowly peel the stencil from the journal to reveal your design.

Project 2 – Tombstone
Since the January 2024 Club Couture design was a bit challenging, using the chalkable shape for a different kind of project felt like a good option. One of the customers who watched the Facebook Live where this journal was created mentioned that the shape reminded them of a headstone. This project immediately came to mind, and that meant there would be Halloween crafting in January! Don’t be afraid to think outside the box or outside the season! This was great inspiration that sparked some creativity even though Halloween was not top of mind!
Supplies for this project:
- January 2024 Club Couture Chalkable Shape and base from the Chalk Couture Board & Base surface (you could easily cut this out of card stock or find something similar to use with a Cricut),
- Halloween stencils of your choice (Bad to the Bone stencil, which is a retired stencil, was used for this project),
- chalk paste or paint colors of your choice (Chalkology Paste in Storm, Black Velvet, Nominee, Pesto and Sincerely Yours were used for this project. Learn more in the Chalk Couture Paste & Ink Guide),
- makeup sponges,
- a squeegee,
- a paintbrush,
- distilled water (for use in “painting” the chalkable shape with chalk paste).
- Optional: ChalkSuede Paper

Steps to create this project:
- Water down your foundational chalk color and “paint” it onto your tombstone. (Chalk Couture Storm Chalkology Paste and 2 drops of distilled water used here.)

- Add other colors to create an aged effect. Chalk Couture Chalkology Paste in Black Velvet, Nominee and Pesto were dabbed on with makeup sponges to give a little depth and texture.

- A frog skeleton was chalked onto a piece of ChalkSuede Paper using Pesto and Nominee with the marbling effect (learn more in The Marbling Technique with Chalk Couture is a Hot Mess).

- Put the tombstone into the base and adhere the frog to the base (tape used here but you can also glue the frog to the base to permanently affix it).
- Enjoy!

Who would have thought that the January 2024 Club Couture chalkable shape would turn into a tombstone? Thinking outside the box or the season can spark your creativity and result in fun and unique projects! I hope this blog post inspired you to craft and create beyond just the season we’re in!
I can’t wait to see what you create!
