The Chalk Couture Shadow Effect really makes your design pop! You will need to pick 2 chalk paste colors for this shadow technique. There is no right or wrong here! Light and dark colors create a great contrast, while colors in the same family create a more subtle effect. Pick two colors that make you happy, that coordinate with your decor or that are appropriate for the season or project you are creating.
How to create the Chalk Couture Shadow Effect
Supplies:
- Stencil of your choice
- Surface of your choice
- 2 Chalkology Paste colors
- Squeegees
- Drying tool (or hair dryer) (optional)
Step 1: Apply your stencil to your surface, smooth it out to make sure there are no bubbles, and chalk your design in your first paste color. Lift your stencil to reveal your design. This will be the color of the shadow.
Step 2: While your chalk paste is drying, clean and dry your stencil so you can use it for the next layer. If the paste is still a little tacky or you’re just impatient, you can use the drying tool (or a hair dryer) to speed up the drying process.
Step 3: Once your first layer of chalk paste is dry, make sure your stencil is completely dry and reapply it to your surface. Start by lining it up with the first layer but then move it ever so slightly so it is a little offset. You can move it slightly to either side.
Step 4: Chalk your design in your second paste color. This will be your primary color. Peel and reveal your design!
Tip: to avoid your first layer of chalk paste being pulled up when applying your second layer, you can use a little wax to seal your first layer. Simply apply a small amount of Chalk Couture wax (or any finishing wax) with a clean cloth. (Learn more about all the Chalk Couture Tools here.)
The Chalk Couture Shadow Effect is a super easy and effective technique that will add dimension to your projects. It works for words and for images equally well.
The shadowing technique is also a good way to fix a design that just isn’t working. For example, the words “Fall Vibes” chalked on this denim pumpkin in Shimmer Gold Chalkology paste just seemed to disappear. Using the shadow effect with Velvet Black Chalkology paste really makes those words stand out and come alive!
