Lending a Helping Hand with Crafts for Charity

Lending a helping hand by making crafts for charity is really inspiring and a great way to support a good cause! The DuPage Habitat for Humanity held their second annual Repurpose for a Purpose event on April 14, 2023, to raise money for their organization. DIYers were invited to participate to support the cause, and it was an awesome way to help advance Habitat for Humanity’s mission.

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization whose vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. This is such a simple yet powerful vision for the world we live in! Habitat for Humanity partners with people all over the world to help them build or improve their homes. Habitat homeowners work alongside volunteers to build a place they can call home and pay for their home with an affordable mortgage. Find out more about Habitat for Humanity.

There are so many ways to support Habitat for Humanity. You can donate:

  • money to help fund their work,
  • time to help build a home, learn new skills and make new friends. You can volunteer in your community, with a group or as part of a special event.
  • materials to the ReStore home improvement stores or support them by shopping at these stores.

What is the annual Repurpose for a Purpose event?

DuPage Habitat ReStores in Addison and Aurora, Illinois, came together to raise funds in support of affordable housing! This annual event includes a silent auction where you can bid on one of a kind items originally found in the Restore home improvement stores. DIYers were given the chance to choose an item from ReStore to reimagine and repurpose for the silent auction which was open to the public. Being able to craft for charity and give back to the community was incredible and so fulfilling!

How did Little Sister Chalks support the Repurpose for a Purpose event?

I was honored to participate as a DIYer for this event and had so much fun transforming an item for the silent auction. Here is the journey our item took for Repurpose for a Purpose:

  • We shopped at the Aurora and Addison ReStore locations to find an inspiring item to transform. This plain Jane mid-century modern coffee table caught our attention. Its shape and simplicity offered lots of potential!

  • The first step in the transformation required lots of sanding.

  • After sanding, the painting began! First up was a coat of primer followed by white paint for the table top and black paint for the legs.

  • After the paint dried, the Vintage Rose stencil was applied to the table top with Black Velvet Chalkology paste. This accent was stunning and looked like a piece of lace laying on the table! Learn more about Chalk Couture Stencils and Chalkology Paste.

I know I’ll be participating in this event again next year, and I’m also working on incorporating ongoing support for DuPage Habitat for Humanity into my business! Giving back is so important, and this is a terrific cause! I hope you’ll mark your calendar to watch for this event next spring! If you’re a DIYer, I hope you come join us and get in on the fun!
